Georgetown Fabrication Shop • 25 Years of Industry Experience • AWS D1.1-Certified Welding Capability • Custom Stair and Railing Fabrication • Installation Available by Scope

Steel Stairs Built for Strength, Fit and Daily Use

A custom steel staircase must fit the available space, support the intended loads and maintain consistent geometry from the first step to the finished floor.

Precision Fabshop works with homeowners, builders, general contractors, designers, architects and project teams that need steel stairs fabricated around approved plans and actual project conditions.

We focus on accurate stair layout, dependable structural connections, consistent tread support, proper mounting locations and practical installation planning. Every staircase is reviewed according to its floor-to-floor height, available run, width, landings, stringer configuration, tread material, railing system, finish and installation requirements.

Custom Steel Stair Systems We Fabricate

Our steel stair fabrication capabilities include:

  • Mono-stringer staircases
  • Double-stringer staircases
  • Floating-style and open-riser stairs
  • Straight-run steel stairs
  • L-shaped stairs with landings
  • U-shaped and switchback stairs
  • Interior residential staircases
  • Exterior steel stairs
  • Commercial stair systems
  • Mezzanine and platform stairs
  • Shop and equipment-access stairs
  • Steel stair landings and platforms
  • Replacement stair stringers
  • Custom stair support frames
  • Job-specific steel stair assemblies

The final stringer type, material size, connection details and support requirements must follow the approved design and project drawings.

Steel Stair Components and Structural Supports

Precision Fabshop can fabricate individual stair components or a coordinated steel stair assembly.

  • HSS tubing stair stringers
  • Plate or channel stringers
  • Mono-stringer support systems
  • Double-stringer support systems
  • Welded tread-support arms
  • Steel tread plates and pans
  • Landing frames and platforms
  • Support columns and posts
  • Base plates and connection plates
  • Wall-mounting plates and brackets
  • Floor and slab connection plates
  • Gussets and stiffeners
  • Guardrail and handrail mounting points
  • Custom steel trim and closure components
  • Bolted or welded field connections

All components are fabricated according to the approved dimensions, material specifications, connection details, weld requirements and finish.

Steel Stair Tread and Finish-Tread Options

The stair structure and final tread material must be planned together. Tread thickness, attachment points, overhangs, clearances and finished elevations affect the steel support layout.

Depending on the project, stair tread options may include:

  • Wood treads installed over steel support plates
  • Solid steel plate treads
  • Formed steel tread pans
  • Bar-grating treads
  • Safety-grating or perforated metal treads
  • Concrete-filled steel tread pans
  • Customer-supplied finish treads
  • Custom tread-support frames

Wood, stone, glass, concrete and other finish materials may be provided by another contractor unless specifically included in our proposal.

The final tread dimensions and attachment requirements should be confirmed before the stair steel is released for fabrication.

Custom Handrails and Guardrails for Steel Stairs

Precision Fabshop can coordinate the stair structure with a matching handrail or guardrail system. Planning the stair and railing together helps establish post locations, mounting plates, transitions, attachment details and finished elevations.

explore Handrails

Available railing styles may include:

  •  Horizontal steel railings
  • Vertical picket railings
  • Wall-mounted steel handrails
  • Cable railing frames
  • Glass railing support systems
  • Steel guardrails for landings and open sides
  • Exterior commercial handrails and guardrails
  • Custom railing transitions and terminations

Cable, glass, specialty hardware and finish materials are included only when identified in the proposal.

Engineering, Project Requirements and Stair Safety

Steel stairs, landings, handrails and guardrails are life-safety components. Requirements vary accor

 The project documents should identify:

  • Floor-to-floor height
  • Available stair run
  • Stair width
  • Rise and run
  • Headroom
  • Landing dimensions
  • Stringer configuration
  • Structural loading requirements
  • Stringer sizes and support conditions
  • Tread material and thickness
  • Connection details
  • Anchor requirements
  • Handrail requirements
  • Guardrail requirements
  • Opening limitations
  • Finish requirements
  • Inspection requirements
  • Applicable project codes and standards

Precision Fabshop fabricates according to approved drawings and defined project requirements. We do not assume structural loads, connection designs, code classifications or required stair geometry that are not identified in the project information.

When engineering or sealed drawings are required, we can coordinate with a third-party licensed engineer. Engineering is not represented as an in-house service.

Permitting, code review, engineering approval and final inspection are handled by the responsible owner, contractor or design professional unless specifically included in our scope.

Steel Stair Materials and Finish Options

Steel stair systems can be fabricated from HSS tubing, structural channel, plate, angle, flat bar, steel tread pans and other materials specified in the project drawings.

Available finish options may include:

  • Raw steel
  • Cleaned and prepared steel
  • Shop primer
  • DTM primer and finish paint
  • Clear-coated steel when appropriate
  • Cold-galvanizing coatings
  • Hot-dip galvanizing coordination
  • Powder-coating coordination
  • Project-specified coating systems

Interior and exterior stair systems may require different surface preparation, coatings and maintenance expectations. Finish requirements should be identified before pricing because coatings can affect fabrication, handling, transportation, installation and production time.

Final colors, gloss levels, textures and specialty coating requirements should be selected before the staircase enters finishing.
