Professional Shop and Field Welding

Precision Fabshop provides welding as a standalone service and as part of larger structural steel and custom fabrication projects.

Working from approved drawings, dimensioned sketches or clearly defined project requirements, we can coordinate material preparation, cutting, fit-up, welding, grinding, assembly, finishing, delivery and installation within one project scope.

Our primary work is carbon-steel fabrication and welding. Stainless steel, aluminum and other specialty-material projects are evaluated individually according to the alloy, thickness, application, required process, finish and project specifications.

Every welding project is reviewed for material condition, accessibility, structural requirements, safety concerns, inspection requirements and intended use before work is scheduled.

Steel components being welded

Field fit-up, welded connections, equipment supports, stairs, railings and other fabricated steel can be installed when included in the quoted scope.

Shop Welding Services

Our Georgetown fabrication shop provides a controlled location for steel layout, preparation, fit-up, welding, grinding and assembly.

Completing welds in the shop provides better access to the work and allows components to be measured, positioned and assembled before reaching the jobsite. Shop fabrication can also reduce the amount of cutting, welding and adjustment required in the field.

Common shop welding projects include:

Structural Steel Welding

Completed structural steel weld fabricated to approved project details

Structural welding must be based on clear and current project requirements. Precision Fabshop works from contractor-provided, engineer-provided or otherwise approved drawings that identify the materials, connections and required welds.

AWS D1.1-certified welding capability is available for applicable structural-steel projects.

Before pricing structural welding, provide the applicable:

  •  Current structural drawings
  • Connection details
  • Welding symbols
  • Material specifications and grades
  • Applicable welding code
  • Weld procedure requirements
  • Joint-preparation requirements
  • Required weld size and length
  • Inspection or testing requirements
  • Documentation requirements
  • Drawing revisions and addenda
  • Finish and coating specifications
  • Installation requirements

Welder certification does not replace engineering, approved drawings, inspection requirements or project specifications. Precision Fabshop will not select an unapproved structural connection or make a structural design decision that belongs to the project engineer.

Steel Repairs and Modifications

Additional Information

Steel repair and modification requests are reviewed individually. The correct repair depends on the base material, type of damage, original design, structural loading, existing coatings and access to the affected area.

Potential repair and modification projects include:

  • Cracked steel components
  • Broken brackets
  • Damaged frames
  • Replacement steel sections
  • Reinforcement plates
  • Added gussets or stiffeners
  • Equipment-support modifications
  • Gate and hinge repairs
  • Stair or railing adjustments
  • Steel-frame alterations
  • Trailer-component repairs reviewed by scope
  • Misaligned fabricated components
  • Field-fit corrections
  • Approved structural reinforcement

Send photographs showing the complete component, damaged area, surrounding connections and existing installation. Include approximate dimensions and explain how the damage occurred whenever possible.

Structural repairs may require an engineer’s evaluation and approved repair detail before welding begins. Third-party engineering coordination is available when required.

We may decline repairs involving unidentified metals, severe corrosion, unsafe working conditions, heavily contaminated material, inaccessible weld locations or missing engineering direction.

Materials We Evaluate

Our primary welding and fabrication work involves carbon steel used in structural, commercial, residential and custom steel projects.

Common carbon-steel materials include:

  • Wide-flange beams
  • HSS square and rectangular tubing
  • Structural pipe
  • Channel
  • Angle
  • Plate
  • Flat bar
  • Round bar
  • Sheet steel
  • Expanded metal
  • Steel grating

The welding process is selected according to the material, joint, thickness, position, environment and project requirements. Depending on the project, work may involve wire welding, TIG welding or stick welding.

Stainless steel, aluminum, cast materials, galvanized steel and unidentified metals require individual review. Send the material grade or alloy whenever known.

Galvanized and coated steel may require coating removal, ventilation, respiratory protection, fire precautions and coating restoration. Do not bring coated or chemically contaminated material to the shop without identifying the coating first.

What Can Affect a Welding Project?

Welding time and pricing depend on more than the visible length of the weld. Project requirements may include:

  •  Material identification
  • Surface preparation
  • Removal of paint, rust or coatings
  • Cutting and joint preparation
  • Fit-up and alignment
  • Temporary supports
  • Weld-position access
  • Preheating or temperature control

  • Inspection or testing
  • Grinding and cleanup
  • Equipment and lifting requirements
  • Fire-watch requirements
  • Hot-work permits
  • Protection of surrounding property
  • Field travel and mobilization
  • Final coatings and touch-up

Combustible materials must be removed or properly protected before hot work begins. The property owner, general contractor or site manager must identify site-specific safety requirements, permits and shutdown procedures before field welding is scheduled.
