Structural and Miscellaneous Steel Fabrication

Structural steel fabrication converts approved construction drawings into steel members and assemblies that are prepared for delivery and installation.

Every component must be fabricated according to the specified material, dimensions, connection details, hole locations, weld requirements, tolerances, finish and piece quantities shown in the project documents.

Precision Fabshop can quote individual members, repeat components, welded assemblies or larger fabrication packages. Our services may include material procurement, cutting, drilling, coping, layout, fit-up, welding, assembly, finishing, identification, delivery and installation.

Each project is reviewed individually according to its drawings, steel quantities, member sizes, material grades, connection requirements, inspection requirements and requested schedule.

Beams, Columns and Structural Frames

Fabricated structural steel columns with welded base plates

Precision Fabshop fabricates structural members for commercial buildings, residential construction, building additions, mezzanines, equipment platforms, steel buildings and other approved applications.

Fabrication may include:

  • Cutting members to specified lengths
  • Coping beam ends
  • Preparing connection areas
  • Drilling connection holes
  • Welding base plates to columns
  • Welding cap and bearing plates
  • Installing stiffeners
  • Installing gussets
  • Adding clips and connection tabs
  • Fabricating HSS frames
  • Producing welded beam assemblies
  • Producing column assemblies
  • Marking individual members
  • Organizing steel for installation

Member sizes, orientations, connection details, welds and tolerances must follow the controlling drawings and specifications.

Structural Plates, Brackets and Connections

Additional Information

Connection components are a critical part of structural fabrication. Accurate plate dimensions, thicknesses, hole locations, orientations and weld details help fabricated steel fit properly during installation.

We fabricate:

  • Base plates
  • Cap plates
  • Bearing plates
  • Splice plates
  • Connection plates
  • Embed plates
  • Gusset plates
  • Stiffener plates
  • Clip angles
  • Weld tabs
  • Connection tabs
  • Structural brackets
  • Anchor-bolt templates
  • Equipment-mounting plates
  • Custom structural components

Individual components, repeat parts and welded assemblies can be quoted from dimensioned drawings.

Fabrication From Approved Project Drawings

Additional Information

Structural fabrication begins with clear, current and approved project documents. We regularly fabricate from contractor-provided, architect-provided, engineer-provided or otherwise approved drawings.

Before fabrication begins, the documents should identify:

  • Structural member sizes
  • Material grades
  • Overall dimensions
  • Plate dimensions and thicknesses
  • Hole sizes and locations
  • Connection details
  • Weld symbols
  • Required weld sizes
  • Piece marks
  • Quantities
  • Required tolerances
  • Finish specifications
  • Drawing revisions
  • Inspection requirements
  • Documentation requirements

Current PDF drawings should be submitted even when CAD files are available. The PDF set establishes the controlling dimensions, notes, revisions, materials and connection requirements.

When engineering or sealed drawings are required but have not been completed, Precision Fabshop can coordinate with a third-party licensed engineer. Engineering is not represented as an in-house service.

Precision Fabshop does not determine structural loads, select unapproved member sizes or design structural connections without appropriate professional direction.

Structural Steel Welding and Assembly

Welding is completed according to the approved drawings, specified weld details, material requirements and project documentation.

AWS D1.1-certified welding capability is available for applicable structural-steel projects. Certification requirements, welding procedures, applicable codes, inspection requirements, testing and required documentation must be identified before pricing.

Structural welding may include:

  • Base plates welded to columns
  • Cap plates and bearing plates
  • Beam and column assemblies
  • HSS structural frames
  • Connection plates
  • Gussets and stiffeners
  • Brackets, clips and tabs
  • Stair and landing assemblies
  • Mezzanine components
  • Platform components
  • Equipment-support frames
  • Custom welded assemblies

Precision Fabshop does not assume structural weld sizes, connections, loading requirements or repair details. These requirements must come from approved drawings or the project engineer.
